How to explain science to your grandma: workshop on scientific dissemination with Dr. Giuliana Galati and Dr. Cristian Manzoni.
GC is a researcher at Università degli studi di Bari, ci-founder of Scientificast, an independent podcast of scientific dissemination since 2007, and within the authors and presenters of Superquark+.
CM is researcher at CNR and contract professor at Polimi, collaborator of Bergamoscienza.
Both Giuliana and Cristian share broad experience in dissemination activities.

Speed Date with Research 4.0
“Speed Date with Research” is an outreach event in which master students from Engineering Physics can meet PhD students and PostDocs from the Physics Department of Politecnico di Milano and jump into their research activity. The students can ask any curiosity about the laboratories of the Physics Department directly to the people that live the lab-life, in order to choose their master thesis project.

Career Luncheon with Optica and Coherent Inc.
July 2022
As representatives of innovative researchers in the field, David Carlson and Chiara Trovatello, winners of the Bernard J. Couillaud Prize in 2019 and 2022, respectively, shared a little bit on their background, research and excitement for the future of field related to research and applications. Their talk was followed my a networking session with PhD, postdocs and early careers present at the Luncheon.

Within the traveling Lecturer Grant programme, we organized the event “Start-Up Science: How does Academia turn into Industry?” focused on the exploitation of experimental knowledge for industry and society, from scientific curiosity to real world applications. In a the form of a rountable, out keynote speaker, Prof. Ursula Keller from ETH Zurich, together with 4 successful start-ups (NIREOS, Tmek, FLEEP Technologies, pioNIRS) have shared with us their inspiring stories and experiences.

Physics Talks
PhysicsTalks is a new format aiming at connecting the students of Engineering Physics with Physics Engineers, who will share their professional and personal life experience, and hopefully inspire the students for their future careers!
For the first event the Chapters hosted Dr. Chiara Trovatello, their founder and former president, who shared her experience in the field of Academic research. Starting from her studies, she guided the attendees through her path in research.

In collaboration with the LGBTQIA+ association of Polimi (Poliedro) we organized a Webinar entitled “LGBTQ+ in Science” with Alfredo Carpineti (UK), astrophysicist and founder of Pride in STEM, Sonia Zuin (IT), contract teacher at Polimi, and Lietsel Richardson (US), member of “500 queer scientist” and “black in neuro”.

Women in Science
Roundtable: Women in Science, from Academia to Industry. We organized of a webinar called “Women in Science”, that I also moderated. Here, 4 great scientists (Roberta Ramponi, Gabrielle Thomas, Francesca Calegari and Donatella Sciuto) shared their lives and careers in the form of a roundtable. The webinar discussed about gander pay gap, stereotypes, maternity and paternity leave, along with EU statistics.

Is Science Dead?!
Webinar on Research Ethics, discussing ethics of scientists, ethics of editors and ethics of journalists with three experts in the topic: Dr. Elisabeh Bik, Prof. Stephen Burns and Laura Helmuth.
Organized in collaboration with CISMA.

What is the actual situation regarding Diversity in STEM? Are there discriminations against LGBT+ scientists? Spoiler: yes.
An online conversation with Alfredo Carpineti, astrophysicist and co-founder of Pride in STEM, association with which he created the international LGBTSTEM Day in 2018, raising support by important scientific entities as CERN, ESA, the journal Nature and the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford.

Streaming the online conference POM, giving free access to bachelor and master students to an international conference. The Chapter of Milan was proudly one of the official streaming hubs of POM.

Career Event: Options after your PhD
June 2019
Figuring out a career path after your PhD (or any other point during your studies) is the hardest task every student has to face, especially approaching the end of their studies. And the unescapable question is always: “So, what should I do next?”. This encouraged Araceli Venegas Gomez and Chiara Trovatello on behalf of EPS Young Minds to organize the Career Event at the CLEO EU Conference in Munich, on June 23rd 2019.
In the form of a discussion panel, young scientists had the opportunity to engage with six different invited speakers, both from Academia and Industry: Thierry Botter, Hannieh Fattahi, Wilhelm Kaenders, Gregory Quarles, Clara Saraceno and Gabrielle Thomas. The room was completely full (look at the picture!), and the audience was impressively engaged.

The event continued with a Q&A panel followed by a refreshment.
